This was a core class where we learned to use Adobe PremierPro, Photoshop, and audio recorders. There were four main projects through the term: a text story, photo story, audio story, and video story.
Text Story
Objective: Write a cohesive story and cut down the interview to the most important part while keeping it relatively short.
The snapping of a branch and the loud thud of it falling makes people jump, but that’s just Emily teaching a pruning workshop. This is just one of her responsibilities. Emily Johnson works at grassroots garden here in Eugene growing vegetables and fruits for the people of Lane County. Her efforts have led to people getting fresh produce who may not be able to obtain it themselves. She welcomes over 2500 volunteers out to the garden each year to help with the process and learn how to garden.
Previously, Johnson has worked as an orchardist and at the National Clonal Germplasm Repository in Davis, California. This is where thousands of varieties of produce are stored and grown. An example she gave to me was how we only think about one variety of pomegranate, but the repository has over thirty varieties that we would never think about. The fruit has different colors, appearance, and taste. Learning about the various types of trees and being skilled at pruning has translated into her time at Grassroots. She has increased the fruit yield in the orchards here with her understanding of trees.
She also participated in an online cohort that had then traveled to Japan in November to learn how to become more of a leader on the farm. In Japan, the farm she visited assisted her with hands on learning and interactions. ARI, the farm she visited in Japan, focused on a closed loop system where they were 95% food self- sufficient. Johnson said, “You’re able to just have quality interactions with so many different people from so many different walks of life and it’s really rewarding.” Being able to meet the people who are pursuing the same path has been an incredible experience for her.
Bringing this knowledge back to Eugene has made Emily want to implement different ways of farming at Grassroots. She hopes to revegetate the soil with native plants and is interested in building habitat corridors.
“The way that she interacts with groups, she is very in tune with them.” Said Jamie Johnson, another staff member at Grassroots. Emily’s interactions with the volunteers have been noticed by those around her. Not only have her skills in agriculture been impressive, but she forms a connection with each person she meets.
Photo Story
Objective: Take 4 different types of pictures and write captions for each one. Use Photoshop to edit the lighting if needed.
Action Shot

The saddle is hoisted onto the horse by Cushman. The saddle is heavy and requires strength to get it onto the horse. They then have to adjust the saddle to sit correctly on top of the horse and fasten it under the belly.
Detail Shot

The saddle is carried from the tack room to the horse stall where the saddle is placed on the horse. A type of blanket is placed on the horse before the saddle goes on.
Close Up Shot

Cushman takes their horse to the training arena where they will practice routines for competitions. This includes posture and riding patterns.
Establishing Shot

The Oregon Horse Center is home to the Equestrian team’s horses. Clare Cushman (20) attends their riding lesson here every Tuesday evening. They prepare the horse for riding by brushing, saddling and picking the dirt out of the horse’s hooves.
Audio Story
This audio story was done about Clare and the Equestrian team. I gathered different sound bites to use as background noise and clips to transition the interview. I had to take a five minute interview and cut it down to 90 seconds. I used Adobe PremierPro.
