Wren Frederick has been an Avalanche fan since 2019. SInce then she has followed them closely and created a connection with the team. The Avalanche have a truly special fan connection, and this can be seen through Wren.
What made you an Avs fan and why?
I had been into hockey since 2017 following another team, the Washington Capitals which was who my dad liked. The turning point for me when it came to becoming an Avs fan was the addition of the player, Cale Makar. I was at a pizza restaurant with my dad to watch the 2019 NHL playoffs, the Avs game specifically, when I watched Cale Makar make his first NHL goal on his NHL debut night, and I was hooked. I could tell the Avalanche as a team had good chemistry, and that’s what ultimately tied me into becoming a more “die hard” fan. Also, it’s my home team and I felt a certain sense of loyalty to that as well.
What is the best way you have been engaged at a game?
The best way I have been engaged at a game is through fan chants! When the puck goes into that net, it’s an immediate uproar and celebration in the arena. That is when I feel most engaged with the game and the fans, because nothing else exists outside the arena. It’s just a bunch of people who love the sport of hockey together on a random evening, celebrating together.
Why do you like going to the games?
Hockey games are exciting. The fans are what make them really great though. Every goal, every hit, every play is celebrated and it’s a really fun environment to be a part of. On a more personal level, it’s a special thing between me and my dad, so I hold hockey games close to me because of that as well.
Do you feel like there is a strong community for the Avalanche?
I think the Avalanche have one of the best fan communities out there. Hockey as a whole isn’t considered the most diverse sport due to its northern origin, but I feel the Avs community and fan base do a good job by including diversity into their games. For example, they host pride nights to support LGBTQ+. As a queer hockey fan, it’s a nice feeling to know the team you love so strongly isn’t afraid of mentioning the word gay.
What is your favorite Avs memory?
My favorite memory as an Avs fan was when they won the stanley cup. I went down to Denver for the parade and watched them hold up the large Trophy. I loved seeing the players outside of their jerseys and celebrating their hard work as athletes. Everyone on that street was there to celebrate the Avalanche, and it was just really an enjoyable and fun experience over all.
