Have you ever wondered how your favorite players interact off the ice? Well I do. While I absolutely love watching what they do best, play hockey, I also like the idea of them having fun with each other. I have found that through their social media network, the Avalanche have provided a wide range of ways to feel connected with the team.
From highlight reels to behind-the-scenes moments, Instagram and Youtube have become the ultimate rink side seat for hockey fans, transforming how the game is shared and experienced. Personally, my favorite way to follow the Avalanche is through Instagram and Youtube. While they have some similarities, I follow each one for a different reason. In this week’s blog post I am going to share with you my favorite ways the Avs social team has reeled me in.
- The Big Hat
Each week the players pass the big hat, and when I say big hat, I mean it. This is a giant baseball hat they give to someone they think did extra well during the game. The player that got it the previous week gets to pass it to the next person. I like how they show each other support after the game. Even if they only say a few encouraging words to each other, I like to make my guess as to who will get it each week based on the parts of the game I’ve seen.
- Engaging captions related to trends
I have such appreciation for the social media team writing captions. They genuinely make me smile and laugh. A lot of the captions are a play on words or a reference to a viral audio clip that people will voice over. One of my favorites was the caption “In da clerb we all fam.” It was an audio that was making its rounds on TikTok, but I hadn’t expected to see it on Instagram, so it caught me by surprise in the best way. I will include some of the posts at the bottom of the page.
- Media day sneak peeks
I like seeing the team goof around with each other during the snippets they post of their media days. They play games with each other and I truly enjoy watching these. This tends to be how I know when to go to Youtube to see the full video.
- Player surprises
Sometimes the players get a surprise. This is something that I like seeing. Recently, Cale Makar got a pair of gold skates, he didn’t seem super excited about them, but it’s the thought that counts. This isn’t so much a surprise, but a reveal: we traded our two previous goalies for new ones this season, and they revealed on Instagram their new custom masks and the designs on them. You also get to see the different Colorado teams surprise each other at games.
- Game day updates
As someone who goes to school out of state, it is very difficult to watch the games live. I usually have to resort to their app and Instagram to get live updates. They post on Instagram stories during the game with the score after each period and clips of the game.
- Polls
Every so often they will put a poll or question on their story. My favorite one so far was for the ship name for our goalies. We received two new goalies that happened to have similar names: Blackwood and Wedgewood. Because of that they let the fans choose the ship name. The result? The Lumberyard.
Youtube
- Peak access
This is a series on their channel where they take a closer look at one of the players or something that is happening within the team. The videos vary in length and give a nice insight into who the players are. It connects the fans with the team by showing them some behind the scenes workings of the organization.
- Fun with the avalanche
This is one of the playlists that has all of their media day games. It’s a really fun way to see the team interact with each other. It also has all the videos of the individual days with the Stanley Cup when they one in 2022.
- Avalanche 360 features
Another playlist that are short videos that feature more social interactions. It is definitely outdated, but is fun to watch.
